Review
5.0 out of 5 stars -- Sensual, Sexy & Memorable -- Judith Rocchiccioli -- AVP
Bob Rector has created an incredible, sensual and memorable love story that is in short remarkable. The writing is vivid and the characters are memorable and flawed. Worthy of note is the authors knowledge of the female psyche which is quite remarkable. This is a great read I would recommend without reservation.
5.0 out of 5 stars -- A Great Cliffhanger -- S. R. Mallery -- AVP
I became totally immersed in this fast-paced, page-turning, Machiavellian story. Yet in the midst of all of this duplicity was something a little unexpected for me: a very touching portrayal of two people not just enjoying each other physically, but enjoying true love for the first time in their lives, a love where acceptance, protectiveness, in-sync bantering, and joy was very well portrayed. Highly recommended? You betcha!
5.0 out of 5 stars -- Raw & Natural, Florida at it's Best & Worst-- Patti Ann -- AVP
A fast-paced romantic thriller, filled with a lush setting, despicable villains, sex-crazed creeps, and love-seeking heroes. Kurt and Paula match each other in stature, desirability, and thirst for love. As in any good novel, there's a catch. She's married, and he's involved in the heist of emeralds. It's a pleasure to read a story written by a man who has the rare capability to understand the nuances of a woman's mind and the single-minded focus of a man's determination.
From the Author
The seeds for Unthinkable Consequences began in 1959, the year during which the story is set. My family lived in hot, sultry North Florida and I was at that tender age when I was beginning to see grown-ups in a different light. They were no longer just mommies and daddies, aunts and uncles, neighbors and teachers. There was something else, just below the skin, deep in their eyes. Not only was I changing, so were they, and it set my fertile imagination swirling.
The men had always been my heros. They had saved the world and had been building America in their own image ever since. Three bedroom bricks, big shiny cars, fast boats, sporty clothes, three kids, and a smart, pretty wife stashed away at home ready to throw the perfect garden party at a moment's notice and look stunning while doing so. These men were tough as nails and set high standards for us kids. Especially us boys. There was right and there was wrong; no middle ground. You did right. Period. No excuses. But now I was aware of a fatigue setting in. They had fought hard on the battle front and the home front. They had gotten most of what they wanted, but they were tired of the fight. It never seemed to end. With that came an edginess, and short fuses.
I began to see women differently too. They had run the country while the men were off at war and many had earned college degrees. But all that practical and academic experience was pointless. They would never be allowed to work because it would reflect badly on their husband's ability to support them. They could not even clean their own houses. To maintain the image of a certain affluence required having a conspicuous maid performing those tasks. Wives were allowed to join garden clubs and volunteer for charity drives and tend to the needs of the church and, of course, go shopping. Otherwise they were arm candy for their valiant, all-conquering husbands. They became pampered lionesses pacing restlessly in their gilded cages, smoking, drinking, stifling screams.
But when I became independently mobile and began exploring the world around me I discovered another breed of men and their loose, discardable women. They lived in the shadowy swamps and backwaters of the Florida peninsula, on the edges of the Everglades, or on tiny hidden islands in the Keys. These men played by nobody's rules but their own. They were not interested in marriage or building society. They too had fought for the cause, in Europe and in the Pacific. When peace came, they couldn't stop fighting. It was in their blood. They became mercenaries. Or worse. When they looked at you, you shrank back, your blood turned cold.
My imagination went into overdrive. What if Paula Taylor, a pampered housewife in a gilded cage, made a break for it and ran right into the arms of Kurt Younger, a soldier of fortune? But instead of draining Paula of all the pleasure she is capable of then tossing her aside, Kurt falls madly in love with her. Now he has a dilemma. At the center of it is a sackful of stollen emeralds and Paula. One is worth two million dollars. The other is priceless, the woman who has captured his heart, something he thought impossible. Enthralled with Kurt, Paula must decide: Forsake all that she has known to run away with Kurt to his hideaway island in the Florida Keys or never see him again. Kurt is determined to have both the emeralds and Paula. Only he knows lives are at stake. His, and if he isn't careful--Paula's.
That was the premise for my story and it percolated in the back recesses of my mind for many years - along with countless other story ideas. As a young man I stumbled into the entertainment business, primarily in films and TV (no, not Hollywood - the other 95% of the business). I first tried developing Unthinkable Consequences as a script since that was the medium I was accustomed to. At some point (I can't remember exactly when) I decided the story would work better as a novel than a script. I had always wanted to write a novel and decided Unthinkable Consequences was the perfect project.
I worked on the manuscript in fits and starts, cranking out mounds of pages, but it was constantly being shoved onto the back burner because we were busy raising a family and building our business. Sometimes it would sit there for years before I found time to attack it again. After the kids were grown and gone and our business finally slowed down to something manageable, I pulled the manuscript out again and worked on it nonstop until in was finally finished. So you see, Unthinkable Consequences is not just a book, it's a life-long quest finally achieved.
About the Author
Bob Rector has been a professional storyteller for forty years, but his background is primarily in film, video, and stage work as a writer and director. Bob was one of the pioneers of music videos, first for The Now Explosion and then for Music Connection, which were highly popular nationally syndicated shows that preceded MTV by ten years. He created over 100 films for the top musical artists of the times. Bob wrote and directed an outdoor-adventure feature film, Don't Change My World, and has won countless awards for nature and sports documentaries. His original three-act play, Letters From the Front, entertained America's troops around the world for fifteen years and was the first theatrical production to be performed at the Pentagon. This beloved show, written and directed by Rector, became known as the World's Most Decorated Play. After decades on the road (and in the air) Bob finally settled down long enough to write his first novel, Unthinkable Consequences.

Noir Thriller at its Best
By tassy
Bob Rector's Unthinkable Consequences is a classic film noir in full-blown hurricane technicolour. Bob has created quite simply a breath taking masterpiece of the basic human emotions and revved them to maximum overdrive in a 1956 T Bird. The two main characters, the neglected housewife, Paula and the dangerous stranger, Kurt are instantly blended like cheap coffee in a sleazy motel. Set in Key Largo, Florida 1959, and like the original film, oozes sex appeal and raw animalistic traits. But unlike the original film, Bob has taken the lead characters to new heights, or depths, depending on the situation at hand. And oh boy do those situations change quicker than a whore on a Saturday night at the docks. The sex is sizzling like bare feet on hot sand, the dangerous criminals lurking in the background are as vicious as scorpions in a frying pan and the tension could be sliced with a chainsaw.
If you like your thrillers hot, sweaty, visceral, plain down and dirty then this FIVE STAR Bogartesque slice of nostalgia is right up your alley with a slug of gin and a slug to the jaw for good measure. And this reader does know how to whistle, and here's looking at you, kid.

An Unforgettable Love Story
By Claude Forthomme (Nougat)
This is a book by a talented author who first made a splash in the world of television and theater (in particular with his award-winning "Letters from the Front", shown around the world to raving audiences). Now he has turned to novel writing and produced a thriller-romance that is not merely an unusual love story but a deep excursion into the psyche of one very tormented woman - something of an exploit for a male writer. The only other writer who manages to portray a woman's anxieties as brilliantly (that I know of) is Flaubert. But what Bob Rector has done, is give us a thoroughly modern version of Madame Bovary. His Paula is a fascinating character - and equally explosive.
The book is set in the mid-twentieth century, a pivotal moment in our recent History when women began to liberate themselves from the shackles of male-imposed traditional views on marriage. That too makes the book unusual, and the evocation of the 1950s is perfect, down to the smallest detail, like cigarette-smoking or the make of the car Paula drives.
The plot is well-structured, a thriller full of fast-paced action, with unexpected twists and turns. The dialogue is lively, you can literally see the scenes unfold before your eyes. Paula is beautiful and combative. She is unhappy in her marriage to a bloated, self-important man who leaves her no space for herself. She is determined to free herself and we, the readers, find ourselves rooting for her. Handsome Kurt, her dare-devil lover, is the perfect counterpoint to her lackluster husband. And here, the book becomes a touching love story between two mature adults, Paula and Kurt who will stop at nothing to win her over.
Highly recommended. Note: I received an ARC with the understanding that I was free to review it as I saw fit.

A Great Cliffhanger
By Kindle Customer49
At first glance, Bob Rector's "Unthinkable Consequences" seemed to be about a sexy affair with Paula and Kurt, two inflamed lovers meeting at night to continue their passionate, atmospheric tryst. Instantly seduced by the clandestine situation and lovely descriptions, such as "...listened to the cacophony of night sounds...tree frogs were locked in a grating, rusty harmony, accompanied by the frenzied buzzing of insects...," I became totally immersed in this fast-paced, page-turning, Machiavellian story, where the cast of characters--two ruthless ex-military con artists, a neglectful husband, a secretive mother-in-law, a faithful caretaker, a spoiled college student, a hopeful employee, and a smart, game-playing mascot--all sent me down paths that didn't turn out the way I thought they would.
Yet in the midst of all of this duplicity was something a little unexpected for me: a very touching portrayal of two people not just enjoying each other physically, but enjoying true love for the first time in their lives, a love where acceptance, protectiveness, in-sync bantering, and joy was very well portrayed. So well done, in fact, that towards the end of the book, as the dramatic denouement was drawing near, I found myself thoroughly rooting for this duo, recognizing full well, having read the pattern of this extremely well thought-out cliffhanger, that things just might not turn out `perfect' in the end.
All I can say is I actually looked forward to sitting in a government office, possibly for hours, just so I could finish this book. Now, how many times can you said THAT?! Highly recommended? You betcha!
