Documentation rather than biography is the raison d'etre of new books on aging rock superstars. Fast plumbs Led Zeppelin's depths, and though she overuses the dubious critical strategy of describing instrumental riffs in words ("Just under the surface of the melodic and rhythmic squareness is a harmonic and formal openness and irregularity that is highly significant in terms of the semiotics of the piece"), she offers entertaining and rewarding reading. For deconstruction of rock music, Fast has relatively much to work with in the Zep oeuvre, and "Stairway to Heaven," a familiar hit with pretensions to meaning, proves particularly rich. One of Fast's primary sources is Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, who hasn't been party to most of former bandmates Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's recent undertakings. He adds insight, but as ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman might about Mick and Keith's music. Mike Tribby

Fascinating and insightful overview of a great band

I'm afraid the previous (one-star) review of this book reminds me of some of the clueless press coverage that Led Zeppelin received from certain rock critics during their heyday. (My personal favorite: a 1977 concert review in Rolling Stone that called John Bonham and John Paul Jones "the clumsiest rhythm section in rock.") So here's my take on Susan Fast's "Houses of the Holy": it's a thrilling book, one that should be read not only by every Zeppelin fan, but by anyone interested in popular music. In fact, it's probably the most sustained musicological treatment of any rock artist -- certainly any "hard rock" artist -- ever published. You come away shaking your head at Fast's scholarly energy and her penchant for coming up with striking, original insights into both Zeppelin and the broader "power of rock music."
The book is divided into five chapters, each focused on a particular Zeppelin song, and exploring a different aspect of the band's persona and musical output: intertextuality (musical cross-referencing), myth, "foreign" musical influence, physicality (the music's "pre-linguistic" appeal to the body), and gender. The structure allows for a minutely-detailed breakdown of individual songs -- perhaps too detailed for some readers -- and wider comments about Led Zeppelin and the rock 'n' roll art form they did so much to define.
Is the book a tough read? It depends on your perspective. The run-throughs of particular songs and riffs are, as mentioned, very detailed. There are passages of technical musical criticism that are Greek to me -- but I enjoyed reading them anyway, just for the pleasure of seeing Zeppelin's music receive the sustained and expert attention it deserves. The academic prose? Well, I have to confess I'm a university teacher with a graduate degree in the social sciences -- but I have no time for postmodern jargon and academic windbaggery. Fast's approach steers well clear of these shoals. Her prose is fluid, full of passion for her subject, and chock-full of fascinating observations and interpretations. She refuses to separate the music from the physicality of performing it and the experience of receiving it, as listener or audience member. The result is a well-rounded, subversive synthesis that presents Led Zeppelin whole, and easily doubled my understanding and appreciation of the band.
In a very democratic move that enhances the book's accessibility, "In the Houses of the Holy" gives a fair amount of space to the comments of Led Zeppelin's fans, whom Fast surveyed over the Internet and through an ad in a Zeppelin fanzine. The personal testimonies of what the band has meant to its devotees are moving, and the comments about mythological, musical, and gender aspects of Zeppelin -- carefully sifted and organized by Fast -- illuminate the band's enduring appeal. Fast was also able to carry on an email correspondence with Zep bassist John Paul Jones, who offers his own thoughts and recollections about the band's creative process and diverse musical influences.

If one misses anything in the book, it's more attention to the contribution of Jones and especially John Bonham, whose heavy but limber drumming revolutionized rock percussion. (Fast acknowledges her emphasis on vocalist Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page.) Readers interested in Bonham can consult Chris Welch and Geoff Nicholls' book, "John Bonham: A Thunder of Drums," available here on Amazon. It doesn't take a scholarly-musicological approach like Fast's; but in addition to tracing the outlines of Bonham's short and booze-soaked life, it offers intelligent and technically informed insights into Bonham's drumming, including a song-by-song breakdown of classic Zeppelin cuts in the final chapter. Great photos, too.

Excellent academic study of Led Zep

Due to subject matter, some books make their way to an audience for whom they are not intended. Books on popular musicians that are published by a UNIVERSITY PRESS are a good example. Maybe you can't judge a book by its cover, but you can judge a book by its publisher. This is from Oxford University Press. By itself, that tells you it's probably worth more than two stars.

So I hate to see this book criticized by three reviewers for being what it is, an academic study. For crying out loud, it's a book with lots of footnotes! The author is a college professor. So of course it's not going to be full of gossip about their manager punching someone out.

It is full of fascinating musicological and sociological insight. But to appreciate the book, those are the things you have to want to get out of it.

For the kind of book it is, it is one of the most READABLE books on a rock band that has ever been published.

a different approach

While I would certainly agree that you can overanalyze and lose touch with the emotional edge critical to LZ's appeal, I found Fast's academic approach refreshing. She brought up a number of aspects of the band's music and performance I'd never thought about before, e.g., the sexual interplay between Page and Plant. I also appreciated Jonesy's insights into the creative process, particularly the fact that the music always came first and then the lyrics. But I have to admit it would be interesting to hear from Page and Plant as well.
This is a good book for the thinking Led Zeppelin fan. And no, that's not an oxymoron. I think there are a number of us trying to understand why this band and its members continue to draw us in 20 years after their disbanding. This book is a step in that direction. But it won't titillate you with gossip about groupies and dionysian orgies. Look to Richard Coles for that.

A problem-problem approach

I bought this book thinking I'd have a practical approach on building web applications using REST and Ajax.

From the start, this book almost does not explain what is REST. The book starts verbosely talking about AJAX, DHTML and Web Services with no clear insight. The first steps are testing REST hadn't developed anything yet, it shows code snippets with neither explanation nor context and awful graphics. Two hours after starting reading the book, I feel very dissapointed: no practical advice, no way to build a sample application, a demo, anything like "My First REST Webapp" to have a gratification.

I'm an Appress fan, but this book, from my humble point of view, is horrible.

Not Perfect, But Certainly Worth the Price of Admission.

I cam really close to not buying this book based on the single review that was available. But, poking around the web, reading other reviews, and looking through the table of contents, it appeared to be exactly what I needed to help me complete my current project. When I got the book, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it will indeed fit the bill.

I do agree with the other review that the diagrams are pretty horrible, but they do get the point across.

My title says it all. Hard to read, difficult and poorly chosen examples, bad editing (mistakes all over the place... in code, there's a big difference between a ',' and ';'), have NO IDEA why in a book with this subject, the author discusses table-based layouts (for a NUMBER of pages), the "javascript recipes" section which is just a bad javascript tutorial where the author actually recommends using eval()... I could keep going on, but save yourself the .49c I spent on this book, really, it isn't even worth that. Too bad Amazon requires at least one star.

Ralph W. Tyler (1902–94) was professor of education and dean of the Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. He also served as founding director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and chaired the committee that eventually developed the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

Tyler’s book Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction has influenced readers involved in education for a long time. He displays the curriculum and instruction planning process starting every chapter with a question, and he answers these questions indirectly through an effective explanation. Tyler also illustrates some distinctive examples and experiments that show the educational program as an effective and clear educational instrument.

The book talks about five important chapters. To start, he discusses determining educational objectives and some sources that clarify how to obtain these objectives. He states that the real educational objective is the important changes that occur in student’s behavior through activities that are planned by teachers and carried out by students. He says, “ no single source of information is adequate to provide a basis for wise and comprehensive decisions about the objectives of the school” (Tyler, 1949, p. 5). This means Tyler finds out that no one source contains enough information to offer good decisions about schools’ objectives.

In the next chapter, he demonstrates how to select learning experiences to achieve these objectives. Tyler must set the common kinds of objectives by determining the effective learning experiences to attain them. The important kinds of learning experiences according to Tyler are ones that are useful to improve skills in thinking, getting information, developing social attitude, and developing interests.
Then in chapter three, Tyler talks about organizing learning experiences and he determines effective organizing criteria: continuity, sequence, and integration. He also talks about the organizing principles in planning curriculum elements, organizing structures that contain some levels, and the planning methods that should be used in developing organized programs of curriculum.
In the next chapter, Tyler shows how the learning experiences will be evaluated. He talks about the effective teaching procedures that contain the differences between students, the environment, and the ability and personality of teachers. In the end of this chapter he explains the significant criteria of evaluation tools: objectivity, reliability, and validity.

Finally, he concludes his book with the process of planning and building curriculum. This process is continual and needs all faculty to be involved in it. This faculty can supervise the activities of students, understand the objectives, and reach the learning experiences easily to achieve these objectives and develop curriculum effectively.

Even after sixty years, Tyler’s book still has the ability to be useful among learners and teachers in the educational field. It also has a power to be beneficial for future generations. Tyler writes his book in very natural way. It does not have any difficult words or tough sentences so everyone who reads this book could understand the position he/she takes as an educator and is assured the result of successful teaching. The author explains briefly how the educators should start planning and building the curriculum and what the important procedures are for this plan. The book covers all teachers’ needs from methods or instructions that help them to create and develop the curriculum (which is the basic source of learners’ needs) to learning experiences to attain their educational objectives. It is the most reliable source for teachers and it contains information that will be appropriate with common core standards in the schools over time. The book includes valuable material needed by anyone who wants to plan or work with curriculum. Educating, teaching, and engaging in curriculum planning is not an easy process and no one can play this role except one who has the actual experience in this area. However, everyone who reads this book will feel that they have long experience in the educational field and could manage this plan easily and comfortably. I believe that Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction should be considered the reference of every learner who wants to work in education and curriculum development.

I have read the book many times, but I feel I still need to read it repeatedly. This will be especially true when I become a teacher and am responsible for planning and developing curriculum in a school district. I would recommend this book to current teachers to help them to learn how to educate their students in the best way. I would also recommend this book for current students who are studying education and want to be future teachers. This book can also be beneficial to parents who are home schooling their children because they are also teachers.

Building on the Basics for Program Success

This edition of Tyler’s Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction begins with a thought-provoking forward by Peter S. Hlebowitsh that sets the stage for readers to understand the role that Tyler’s work initially played, and continues to play, for educators and all those involved with curriculum and program development. Hlebowitsh addresses some of the critiques commonly leveled at Tyler’s Rationale. He also points out aspects of the work that must be read with consideration for the full context of the discussion if they are to be interpreted correctly.

The Rationale presented in this text follows an extremely linear path, which at times can lead to a somewhat dry read. Yet the linear structure of Tyler’s writing also supports the use of this text as a guidebook for basic direction on program and curriculum revision or development. Tyler provides a logical way of determining the overarching objectives, which then serve as the foundation for subsequent development efforts. Within this process, he emphasizes the need for consideration and alignment of the program’s philosophy, perspectives related to the psychological (cognitive) process of learning, intended responsiveness to the needs of the learners, desired connections between student learning and contemporary society, and chosen type of interaction with subject specialists and their work.

Tyler provides readers with a step-by-step path to creating learning experiences that are intentionally and strategically designed and organized to achieve the overarching objectives over the course of the program. He stresses the need for evaluation both to assess student learning attributable to the program and to refine the program itself. Readers are encouraged to implement the Rationale in part or in totality, and its design and explication are intentionally general so that educators working with all types of programs, content areas, and student populations can apply the principles to their development efforts.

Tyler highlights the importance of teachers using their creativity and knowledge of students to make the curriculum satisfying and effective for the specific learners in their classrooms. He also encourages collaboration of program staff members to ensure the development of the best program possible. Although Tyler’s language and references are dated at times, his examples and straightforward suggestions and caveats help to ensure that readers will continue to find this text relevant for understanding and implementing curriculum and program development efforts for learners today.

Clementine Rose and the Surprise Visitor

Clementine Rose is delivered in a very odd way, not at a hospital, but “in the back of a mini-van in a basket of dinner rolls.” When discovered by Lady Clarissa, who lives in a crumbling mansion called Penberthy House with elderly butler Digby Pertwhistle, she finds a note asking her to care for the baby. That is how Clementine Rose grows up, loved and adored and very happy with her mother, Uncle Digby and pet teacup pig Lavender. Lady Clarissa has no money, so she decides to take in paying guests and open the house as a hotel. She also has a great deal of luck and wins all sorts of things, from new cars to holidays. She gives most of her prizes away and the lady at the Post Office makes sure she ear-marks each new competition in the new magazines, so the village can benefit from her legendary success.

Although it is difficult at times, the family are poor but very happy. That is, until they have an unexpected visitor... Aunt Violet is snobby, unkind and not at all fond of children. Before long, her visit has thrown Penberthy House into chaos and it is up to Clementine Rose to discover why she is really here and what she wants. There are lots of good characters outside of Clementine Rose and her family, such as people in the village, who help to flesh out the storyline. Also, Penberthy House is an interesting setting and my daughter enjoyed the way Clementine Rose spoke to the family portraits and adored the little mistakes she made, especially with the guests.

This is a really enjoyable story, which will probably appeal mostly to girls of 6+. There are a few black and white illustrations, but it is more suitable for fluent readers – although, of course, it is also nice to read aloud. My daughter is keen to read on with the series and discover what Clementine Rose gets up to next. The next book in the series is Clementine Rose and the Pet Day Disaster.
