About the Author

Peter Joseph is an American-born social critic and activist who has lectured around the world on the subject of cultural sustainability. Once deemed “The Herald of Occupy Wall Street” for his tacit prediction of inevitable global uprisings against inequality and economic injustice, his extensive media work has been translated into over 130 languages and experienced by 250 million people. Peter Joseph's work is the most honest, inspirational, liberating, and compassionate media I have come across. I consider myself a business professional, one-time theist, and a veteran of corporate politics. His work not only identifies the problems of these modern systems that leave so many of us behind, but it also instills a sense of urgency while also instilling a sense of peace, inspiring oneself to serve a much grander purpose than just self placation. His work transcends ruling political and economic ideologies while providing realistic and inspirational solutions for everyone. I don't say this lightly as I am skeptical of anything and everything, but Peter's work holds ground under the scrutiny of social science and methodology. He has become a hero of mine in many many ways. Nice work and thank you, Peter.

This is perhaps the most important book of our times. It is said that you cannot learn truth through the lens of a lie, this book provides the lens necessary to understand every major global issue we face as human beings and as a society. At a time when false symbolism is all and we are witnessing the implosion of truth, this book scientifically and methodologically cuts through the formaldehyde of identity politics, capitalism-spawned abominations, concealed class warfare, structural violence, systematic poverty, ceaseless misinformation, and droves of opinion-pissing human clickbaiters by giving the reader a deep understanding of causality and backing those conclusions with empirical evidence.

It is both a treasure-trove of information and more importantly, an action plan to end the deathscape of endemic poverty, unsustainable wealth inequality, and environmental destruction. Not only should the public be aware of the information provided in this book, but it should be required reading and placed on the desks of every major global institution, governing bodies, educational institutions, think thanks, and so on. It is our only chance at moving towards a survivable future.

Ikram examines the long-term structural aspects of Egypt’s economy and of economic policy-making from 1952 to 2000. Gold standard

The other reviewers have made the points that I would have liked to have made. I have read every significant book that has been written on the Egyptian economy in the last 20 years, and this is better than all of them. By skillfully combining acute technical analysis, the best available data, and insider knowledge of the thinking of international agencies and Egyptian policymakers, this book sets the standard by which all subsequent studies of the Egyptian economy will be judged.

Excellent, well written analysis

This book examines the chief issues that Egyptian policymakers faced during the period starting with the Free Officers' revolution in July 1952 to the end of the Second Millenium (although there are occasional references to events up to 2002). The emphasis is on durable, structural issues, many of which continue to resonate with policymakers.

Readers looking for a detailed account of events on the lines of "this happened, then that happened" may be disappointed. Ikram's technique is to sketch out broad periods that shared major similarities and were largely affected by the same important economic events, eg, the period of the nationalizations and Arab socialism; the infitah or Open Door policy and the influx of oil revenues, worker remittances, foreign aid; the period of falling oil prices, squeezed resources, and major debt reschedulings; and the era of stabilization and the beginnings of significant structural reform, at least in the area of privatizing many of the public enterprises. He then examines the most important issues and questions that policymakers had to deal with during these periods. The emphasis is mainly on macroeconomic issues and policies. These are analyzed using tools of modern economic analysis, and supplemented by interviews with Egyptian policymakers (to see the compulsions that they were under) and from documents and discussions with representatives of the main providers of financial support to Egypt. A particularly fine chapter on what Egypt needs to do to sustain growth in the next 20 years or so rounds off the book.

The data in the book are more reliable than in any other study of the Egyptian economy, since Ikram has had continuous access to the data banks of the World Bank (the book's blurb says he is a former director of that organization), and of the International Monetary Fund. He also has had access to a considerable body of studies and other material from Egyptian ministries, the Central Bank of Egypt, and the Egyptian statistical agency. The book is written in a clear style, with a welcome touch of humor. In addition to appealing to students of Egypt and the Middle East, the book should provide excellent supplementary reading for courses in economic development and in economic policymaking.

This book is apparently the first in a new series from Routledge on Middle Eastern economies. It will be a very hard act to follow.

Outstanding study of Egyptian economy and policymaking

In the 1980s, as a post-graduate student in Middle East studies, I read Khalid Ikram's earlier book Egypt: Economic Management in a Period of Transition (Johns Hopkins University Press). My Cambridge University professor described it as "outstanding." Now Ikram has written another outstanding work.

This book examines economic policymaking in Egypt in the period 1952 to 2000. The book focuses on the more durable issues that policymakers confronted during this period, rather than (to quote Ikram) "on a day to day chronology or on quotidian details." The issues are covered in chapters dealing with investment and productivity, the balance of payments, public finance, the capital market and monetary policy, the labor force and employment, and poverty and income distribution, in addition to three chapters that cover broader issues of political economy.

There is an excellent final chapter on what Egypt needs to do in order to sustain growth in the future, that, in addition to dealing with questions connected with an outward looking strategy provides an in-depth analysis of institutional issues, such as the bureaucracy, the commercial judicial system, the system of taxation, shortcomings in the provision of trained labor, the cost to the environment of economic growth, the constraints imposed by the availability of Nile water, and how the present system of planning and economic management is increasingly being hemmed in by globalization and privatization, and will probably have to be replaced by a more flexible method of indicative planning.

Ikram, a former Director of the World Bank's Egypt department, clearly enjoys unparalleled access to Egyptian policymakers, and the book contains insights from interviews with several Ministers responsible for economic policy. He also quotes from Cabinet studies, as well as from studies by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The book is a veritable tour de force, and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in the development of Egypt and of the Middle East.

Entrepreneur shows the reader what happens when a determined athlete looks at their retirement from sports as the beginning of their career instead of the end.
Does an athlete's willingness to work hard to succeed in sports end once they stop playing or can the values that brought their success in sports be used to achieve even greater things later in life? Does their success end once their athletic skills begin to fade or can they convert these values into entrepreneurial values that become a springboard for other things? About the Author
Jim Grebey is a "hands on" business operations analyst who has worked "in the trenches" helping owners build sustainable business and grow winning teams. He has implemented winning growth strategies for both large and small businesses, resulting in increased revenues, lowered operating costs, and improved customer satisfaction. In 2001 Jim Grebey founded Diligent Inc to provide operations management services for clients trying grow their business and operations due diligence services for investors trying to perform effective operations assessments. Jim Grebey has been able to leverage an analytic engineering background to become a leading business operations analyst. He is known for his aggressive problem solving skills and his ability to "roll up his sleeves" to work with cross functional client teams to perform the detailed root cause analysis needed to identify operations risk and establish effective mitigation strategies to help avoid those risks. Jim Grebey has published numerous management articles and in 2011 he published his first book "Operations Due Diligence - An M&A Guide for Investors and Business" published by McGraw Hill. While living and working temporarily in Asia, Jim Grebey was instrumental in helping offshore businesses bring their products to market in the United States, assisting U.S. businesses seeking offshore partners and helping offshore investors find compatible U.S. businesses for investment. You WANT to live AFTER PRO BALL - read this

I was a high school classmate with George. This story is far more than what he now has - he struggled to get to here and yes there were good times, but there were HARD days - during a recent class reunion he shared how he watched the OJ Simpson "well known" bronco chase and they were both having a bad day - but for him, what he thought that day (a contract denied), ultimately became a blessing when he turned and bought another franchise, setting it on course to now be the #2 or #3 in the country. George is real, honest and vulnerable in sharing with what God has given him. If youth today would listen and take to heart what he shares they to can learn. YES, sports END. Sadly in this generation the rap sheets are longer than the stat sheets but injury and age also don't allow long term life in the spotlight. Many blow the money or use drugs - they are broke when it all ends. They need a PLAN - read, listen and be willing to start low, be teachable and you will be rewarded. George is real and can give you real life help if you will listen.

Helped Pass Exam

This helped me identify the areas of study I needed to focus on to pass the ITIL foundation exam. I took 20 questions at a time and on those that I failed, I studied the relevant sections in the book in particular. After taking all 100 questions I had a good study set of 3x5 cards that I used to study for the real exam. I passed the ITIL foundation with a 90%!

It is a very helpful to identify weak areas for ITIL foundation exam. It also provides a good explanation as a quotation from textbook

Pros: it fits the purpose just fine
Cons: it is not interactive

Highly recommended, especially the kindle version, the paper one is kind of overpriced.

It is a good list of exam questions for the ITIL exam

This book provides a good reference source to help you understand the whole ITIL program better than what you could just get if you were only interested in the test questions.

But the best source of information for the exam was the visual cert test questions. 90% of the questions were word for word from the visual cert. But buy this book anyway. What good is it to just know the test answers when you do not understand the program itself.
