Richly Complex and Nuanced!
By Lori
Richly complex and nuanced, Scent of Salvation by Annie Nicholas, Book One of the Chronicles of Eorthe, is an intricate story of alternate dimensions and paranormal creatures that will appeal to lovers of fantasy and paranormal romances alike.

Dr. Susan Barlow creates a machine that transports people to alternate Earth dimensions. When told that her machine would be used by the military, Susan sabotages it and accidently sends herself to an alternate dimension. Unaware of the dangers that await her in this new world, Susan is unprepared for a world filled with shifters and vampires. Susan first comes in contact with the alpha male of the Apisi Pack; Sorin is in his feral, shifted form and speaks English. Appropriately, Susan freaks out and runs, discovering there are far more dangerous beings in this new world. Susan is intelligent and quick-witted character who always keeps her head in the game as she figures out to survive, which I absolutely adored. Susan's gut tells her that she can trust Sorin. A stoic character, Sorin is difficult to decipher because he is not always forthcoming with his feelings. Even though Susan, as a human, doesn't fit in with the Apisi Pack, she has no problems using playful banter, keeping Sorin on his toes and providing many laugh-out-loud moments. Although Sorin is not used to that kind of banter, he realizes that he likes it coming from Susan. Through these conversations and time spent with Susan, Sorin reveals the playful and romantic side of his personality, which endeared his character to me.

Nicholas does a masterful job of establishing secondary characters who propel the plot forward. Kele and Peder have the potential to be a couple in a future story. Also, the author's develops characters who you will love to hate--Kele's parents and the vampire Benic--adding depth to the story and the multi-layered plot.

Tying up major plot points while leaving just enough unanswered questions, Scent of Salvation is the perfect balance of romance, action, and vivid world building, ensuring the reader will be fully immersed in the story and come away wanting more.

I received an eBook copy from the publisher for purpose of an honest review for The Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Smells like Awesome!
By Mousehead and tales
I received a copy of "Scent of Salvation " for an honest review. I gave this title 4, $,$,$,$, or by most rating systems 4 STARS! It was a great read.
THE PLAYERS:
Dr. Cathy Barlow - Human , creator and destroyer of DOUG ( a type of time travel capsule
Sorin - Alpha shifter if the Apisi pack, love interest of Cathy
Peder- Omega of the Apisi pack
Benic- Vampire, Lord of the territory and enforcer
Kele- shifter, daughter of the Alpha of the Payami pack
Ahote- shifter, Hunter of the Payami pack... Player
Inali- Alpha of the Payami pack
Chaska- mate of Inali, mother of Kele, crazy dominant shifter

Author: Annie Nicholas
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Genre: paranormal romance

SYNOPSIS : Dr. Cathy Barlow invented DOUG to be able to travel through different branches of time. When her invention worked the company that had funded her invention sold it to the government who planned on using it not for research and observation , but most likely as a weapon. Refusing to let her invention land in dangerous hands Cathy chooses to blow up her creation and in the process ends up going through a portal to a world that was similar to North America... Minus any humans and full of what she had thought were mystical / mythical creatures who are living off the land with no technology or pharmaceutical advances.
Each character living in the world that Cathy landed in has different reasons for needing her. A struggle for who would get to keep her ensues as each character thinks she could be the solution to their current problems. While she is stolen from creature to creature this academic and technology obsessed woman begins to enjoy the ways of pack life on what the creatures call Eorthe.
Cathy also finds romance where she least expects it. Though the ways of Eorthe are difficult for her to understand she finds there what a life devoted to research never taught her, what it feels like to belong. What it feels like to love.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS: I really enjoyed the unique and descriptive way that the author described the world that was so similar yet chaotically different from Earth.
The similarities between the Native Americans and the atrocities done to them were subtle yet thought provoking. The original takes on classic supernatural beings was refreshing as well as cleverly described. The subtle difference's in the name of countries and the horrors of human history were amazing!
I would suggest that fantasy , paranormal romance, adventure, and suspense stories would live to escape into this book full of rich ideas, cool world building, and of course anyone who enjoys steamy sex, happily ever after and fun.
I personally signed up for Annie Nicholas news letters, Samhain publishing's website and store. This book had a solid ending and could be a stand alone book, that was a refreshing change from all the cliff - hangers and trilogies that have become so popular though I have a feeling I'll be traveling back to Eorthe if the chance presents itself.
I thought this book was a treasure trove of fun and originality in a genre that needed some life breathed into it. I hope you'll add this book to your to be read list, I'm so glad it ended up on mine.
Make sure to check out other titles by Annie Nicholas. I have a feeling her name is going to be on the lips of a lot of fans .Scent of Salvation (Chronicles of Eorthe)

A Definite Must-Read
By Kindle Customer
- SPOILER ALERT! -
- SPOILER ALERT! -

I was really impressed with this novel on so many levels. So different from so many other paranormal novels. It's part sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, suspense, and (mild) erotic-romance. It has shifters and vampires who live on Eorthe, an alternate-dimension world that Susan has landed in. Like Earth, Eorthe is the land of paranormal species and not humans.

Susan a terrific character that you can't help but love and root for. Though scared (and who can blame her), she's strong, selfless, and determined, trying to find the best solution to her strange and unusual predicament. She doesn't come across as a know-it-all, kick-ass heroine who doesn't need anyone's help. There's so much for her to learn about Eorthe, not to mention rules and etiquette when dealing with the various species and where each one stands in the supernatural hierarchy. The romantic buildup, not to mention the sexual heat, between Susan and Sorin is well-executed. I love how Sorin believes Susan landed in his world to help his ailing pack and to be his mate.

Annie Nichols does a terrific job of weaving an intelligent and intriguing story that includes an interesting array of characters, all of which makes for a believable story. With Susan landing into their world you're able to see some of the characters grow, to change themselves for the better, to think outside the box.

I came to like Kele, Peder, and even Ahote who is so gruff around the edges. The most interesting character I found to be was Benic, the Vampire Lord of the territory. I couldn't make up my mind about him. He's smart, sexy and charming, a vampire who at times comes across as too good to be true. Just when you think you've got a handle on him he commits reprehensible acts, only to turn around and do the right thing. A bit of an enigma.

"The vampire hung his head. "I'm tired of being alone.""

Seriously, you can't help but care for him, maybe even fall for him. He's the good-looking, bad-boy(vampire) you're told to stay away from but just can't. Like I said - charming on so many levels.

In the end a terrific story that takes you on an adventure to a whole new world that is sure to intrigue you, especially if you enjoy the paranormal genre. There were a couple of instances that had me laugh out loud (Sorin and Ahote working together) which is always a bonus. I should also mention that this is a stand-alone novel, no cliff-hanger. Whoo-hoo! I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Will it be the story of Kele and Peder, or will Benic finally find someone to love?

Another entertaining collection
By Ziln
I'd rate this a 5 as it is a very entertaining collection of a lot of stories, but most of them are so short it's over right as you get into it. For those of you following the Dark Horse Aliens/Predator Omnibus collections, know that with this volume the Aliens side is starting to wind down. Mostly out of full length stories, Dark Horse includes a lot of short one-shots here instead.

Alchemy
Formerly a three issue, this is the story of a small colony founded when a ship crashed on a distant planet. It's got a religious theme, but not Christianity like Salvation & Sacrifice do. The art is a little odd at first, but it grows on you. The only thing that irked me was the ending. It's just so abrupt; a whole 4th issue could have easily been written at the time.
4/5

Kidnapped
This is an interesting and really entertaining story about a chestburster that carries some sort of disease and never reaches maturity. The reader follows several different groups of characters throughout the story, but never focuses on one main character. Again though, the ending is somewhat of a cop-out and comes very abruptly.
4/5

Survival
This is probably what I'd say is the gem of Volume 5. It's told from the perspective of a sick guy who's hallucinating and recalling the events that lead him to his current state. This is the final full-length story as the rest are all shorts.
4/5

Cargo
A lone smuggler is trapped on board a massive ship with an Alien. This sort of takes the Alien story into a crime/suspense sort of genre and it's an interesting spin on things.
3/5

Alien
A story about tribal alien creatures on a planet that hide from Aliens every night. Sort of a coming-of-age deal, but obviously a little different. I really enjoy the art and the design of the small alien guys.
4/5

Earth Angel
A story about a ship crash landing on Earth sometime during what looks like the 1960s and wreaking havoc briefly. Features a biker gang. It also tries stupidly to tie in with the films and become some kind of prequel.
2/5

Incubation
Actually the beginning story of Batman/Aliens #1. It's well done; great art by Bernie Wrightson. It's just kind of empty without the context of the real story following it.
3/5

Havoc
This is one of the better 2 issues that Dark Horse released. Oddly, each page is illustrated by a different artist, so it's got a strange feel to it. The story, being a sort of ghost story, fits with the artistic style though.
4/5

Lovesick
Kind of a dumb story about a chick, a little kid, and an evil scientist. The art is good and it's easy to follow and entertaining enough. The story itself is just kind of stupid.
3/5

Lucky
One man manages to survive an Alien infestation aboard a large ship. This would be a great full-length story; I'm disappointed that it's so short as it kind of hurts the overall impact.

Volume 5 is a very good entry in the series, but the non-stop shorts might be more well accepted by Alien fans and not a general comic reader.

Flawed, But Still The Best Aliens Omnibus Yet!

Aliens Omnibus Volume 5 Graphic Novel Review
Grade: A-
The Aliens Omnibus's have always been great, holding great hits like Salvation, Labyrinth, and Apocalypse in their four-colored pages, and Aliens Omnibus Volume 5 is no exception. It packs on the gore, the terror, and of course, our friends the Aliens.
The graphic novel has ten different Aliens comics, ranging from graphic novels to one-shots, with the three-issue or more graphic novels coming first. The rest of the collection are the one-shots and little eight-page fillers, and they're just about all good; the main problem I'd seem to find: the art.
The first story in the Omnibus is Alchemy, the tale of one lady's tale of survival against an evil priest and the Alien, and the horrors mankind can do to itself. The story is excellent, written by John Arcudi; the thing that kills the story is the art. It seems off, and the details aren't really there. The cover art is great though, and the first issue's cover is the cover of the Omnibus. (The Alien is making the weird Star Trek alien peace sign, right?) Alchemy is worthwhile, and the story is one of the best I've seen, so I guess I'll push up the grade to a solid B.
The next story, Kidnapped, once again has an excellent idea, penned by the great Jim Woodring, along with Justin Green, and the art by Francisco Solano Lopez if great; the problem lies in the execution of the comic. Somewhere along the line, the plot gets silly, and winds up being dumb. I did like the fact that it revolves around a "baby" Alien, or a chest-burster for once, but the story still gets a B-.
Survival, the last of the long arcs, had little expectations from me; I had better expectations for Alchemy and Kidnapped, yet, this one was actually pretty good. The art, though sketchy, was decent, and the plot, about a man hallucinating (or is he?) about the Aliens is really good, on a par with Labyrinth. There are no major problems with this one, and I'll say no more about the plot, it's that great. You could say it grows on you, its one of those tales. A-
Then comes the one-shots. Cargo I didn't really like, it just didn't really click. A man gets a surprise in the form of an Alien. C-
Alien, on the other hand, is fantastic. Though only twenty-something pages, it's one of the best ever. Period. A
Earth Angel is great too, and has a pleasant surprise at the end. A
Incubation was just O.K., nothing really special. It is fun to see the race of humanoids encounter the Alien though. B
Havoc is pretty good, with a decent plot, but what's unique about it is that a different artist draws every page! My favorite page? Sergio Aragones's all the way. A-
Lovesick is just O.K. too, the plot decent, the art nothing special. C
The last story, Lucky, is a tale of murder, mayhem, and the things people will do to get away from the dreaded Alien. I just wish this one had been longer than eight pages. A-
All in all, if you don't mind some art problems, this Aliens Omnibus is the best one yet.

Translation and Web Localization, by Miguel A. Jimenez-Crespo

Web localization is a cognitive, textual, communicative and technological process by which interactive web texts are modified to be used by audiences in different sociolinguistic contexts.

Translation and Web Localization provides an in-depth and comprehensive overview into this emerging field of study. The book covers the key areas and main theoretical and practical approaches of the subject, rather than a step by step practical guide. Topics covered include the often controversial definition of localization, how the process develops, what constitutes a text in this process, digital genre theory and its implications, and how to conduct research or training in this field.

The book concludes with a look into the dynamic nature of web localization and the forces, such as crowdsourcing, that are reshaping web localization and translation as we know it.

In light of the deep changes brought by the Internet, Translation and Web Localization is an indispensable book for researchers, postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students of translation studies, as well as practitioners and researchers in related fields such as computational linguistics, applied linguistics, Internet linguistics, digital genre theory and web development.

Review

‘Websites today are expected to function as global communication platforms, yet web localization, as the very enabler, remains under theorized in Translation Studies. Addressing this critical gap, JimĂ©nez-Crespo convincingly presents an integrated approach to web localization as a communicative, textual, cognitive and technological process.’ - Minako O’Hagan, Dublin City University, Ireland

'An important contribution to the field of web localization research.... [This] book is of very high importance for all those working in the fields of translation studies.' - LINGUIST

'In brief, this is a good guide for students or for practitioners that want to have in one book an overview of translation theories, localization concepts and web localization research from where to plan their research and find key references. Also, this book could be insightful for practitioners from other fields (including MT) that might, as the authors says, “dismiss translation as a less complex stage, reducing it to an equivalentreplacement operation” (p. 136) and want to look at the world of TS and empirical research in this particular area, in order to understand the theories that have shaped, even if not overtly, the localization industry.' - Ana Guerberof Arenas, Machine Translation

About the Author

His articles have been published in international journals such as Target, Meta, Perspectives, Jostrans, Linguistica Antverpiensia, TIS: Translation and Interpreting Studies and the Journal of Internationalization and Localization among others. Good source of information
By Allan
It's been a good idea to compile everything that has been done so far it terms of localization. Research and publications continue developing on the industry rather than on education, and I notice that the emphasis goes to web localization. I think there is plenty of things to develop regarding teaching or training of students. However, it’s a good source of information.

When Women Were Warriors Book II: A Journey of the Heart, by Catherine M. Wilson

"A Journey of the Heart [Book II] shows the same strong storytelling ability of the first book. The language is still almost musical and wraps its sweet spell around you.… Storylines that were just starting to grow in the first book are also very well developed here. Intrigue and conflict are fleshed out and take some surprising twists. All that I had hoped for, reading the first book, begins to bloom.…"
--from a review by Kate Genet on the website, Kissed By Venus

"Catherine Wilson creates a magical sense of place, and of belonging to that place. Within that, she also tells how it feels to not belong. … Ms. Wilson’s is a tale of bone wisdom. It whispers of what we remember when we sleep at night and dream. It calls us to remember that women had, and still have, a wise and powerful place in the world."
--from a review on the blog, The Rainbow Reader, by Baxter Clare Trautman

"In this book we see Tamras’ world open from the House of Merin and its immediate environs into the lands beyond its borders. She meets other peoples, whose ways are different from those she knows. Similarly Tamras’ inner life expands as well: the feelings within her blossom into the romantic love that will be the linchpin her life will hinge on…"
--from a review by Charles Ferguson on the Goodreads website

In Book II of the trilogy, Tamras’s apprenticeship as a warrior isn’t turning out quite the way she expected. Her unconventional choices lead to her crossing swords, almost literally, with Vintel, the war leader of Merin’s house. She finds herself embroiled in a power struggle she is doomed to lose, but the loss sends her on a journey that will change her destiny and decide the fate of her people.

An amazing trilogy!
By Jo Dogz
When Women Were Warriors is a lovely and well told story that spans across three books. It's an epic tale of one young girl, fostered to the house of Lady Merin in the hopes of one day becoming a warrior. Tamras may be young and innocent, but she knows what she wants and is determined to walk the path that she feels is best and not the path others would force upon her.

The books not only follows along as Tamras finds her path in the warriors world, we also get to see her discover the depth and strength of her heart and spirit and discover where she fits in in the world. I really like that Catherine has built a world of strong women, yet hasn't fallen into the trap of making the men weak, of body or mind.

I downloaded the first book from Catherine's website and immediately started reading. It didn't take long before I was fully invested in Tamras and where her journey would take her. That was two days ago. When I finished reading it, I immediately purchased books two and three and jumped right in. Needless to say, nothing else got accomplished around here, I blame Catherine for writing such great books. (I should be blaming my own lack of self control and poor time management skills, but where's the fun in that!).

When I finished the third book last night, I didn't immediately write my thoughts down, instead heading to bed with the intention of allowing the story to pecolate through my mind. I should know by now to have a pen and paper next to the bed, as I thought of several amazing, witty, astonishingly insightful things to write. Alas, I awoke this morning and they've all fled my brain. All I can say is I highly recommend the books. Catherine is kind (smart) enough to offer the first book for only a 99 cent download, so you have nothing to loose by giving it a go. If you're anything like me, when you get to the end of it, you'll almost be tripping over yourself to get back online and purchase the next two.

Thanks Catherine for a great trilogy of books :)

Review of When Women Were Warriors, Wilson, Catherine M. ©2008 by Catherine M. Wilson
By Morgan Van Dyke 4-3-08
The trilogy, When Women Were Warriors is written by Catherine M. Wilson. The main character, Tamras, daughter of Tamnet, amuses and challenges the reader as she learns how to develop deep friendships, face fierce battles and betrayal and grow into wisdom. Tamras has only lived in a land where women govern. When she leaves her mother's farm and lands, her adventures and misadventures at the House of Merin, a training camp for warriors begins.

In Book I of Tamras is presented to the House of Merin in hopes that she too may earn her shield. Queen Merin is the shield mate of Tamnet and Tamras hopes that like her mother, one day she too may earn her shield. Throughout the first book she learns the tasks of being a companion to a warrior and struggles with the hope and dread of becoming an apprentice. Find out what happens when tenderness becomes passionate? On the back cover Ginth is quoted, "Make sure of what you want, and when you get it, don't complain."

Book II continues the journey as Tamras learns the meaning of risk and love. What does it mean to face truths that hurt? Should one risk betrayal or betray the one they are bound to? Book II moves so fast it is over before you want it to be. To revel in the tale is like tasting the sweetness of a wild honeycomb while risking the sting and the knowledge that it will be a sticky mess. Who can Tamras turn to for guidance? "What's that? A wind through dry leaves? Black water whispering down a cave wall? No, just the voice of a foolish old women." Maara

In Book III comes Tamras' the challenge of a lifetime. Traveling throughout the land of her enemies, Tamras ponders the questions that will bring her to the brink. Betrayal after betrayal plunges her into despair; can she figure out who is the real enemy? How will she handle her terrors and passion? "You find the lie, you pull its thread, and the

Mary Magdalen: The Lost Diary, by Sharon Calloway Bledsoe

Mary Magdalen: The Lost Diary is a fictionalized life of Mary Magdalen, told in her own words. Much mystery and speculation surround Mary Magdalen. An important disciple of Jesus, she appears in all four gospels, and then drops from view. The question is, “Whatever became of her?” Here Mary herself answers this question in a diary she begins keeping a few months after Jesus’ death and resurrection, and continues up to her own death 50 years later. The author has mined ancient writings, traditions, and legends about Mary to construct a life for her. Pushed out of the inner circle of early church leadership by Peter and the other male disciples, yet convinced that Jesus himself has commissioned her to proclaim the gospel, Mary travels far and wide, seeking ever-new venues for leadership and proclamation, and she finds them in some surprising places, as her life’s journey takes her from Palestine to France, with sojourns along the way in Capri, Rome, and Ephesus.

A compelling story, well-told, firmly grounded in historical and biblical scholarship, Mary Magdalen: The Lost Diary is of broad and timeless interest, and not only to the many who wish to understand more about Mary herself. Mary is very much of her place and time, yet as a woman leader in a man’s world she is also intriguingly modern. Her story’s appeal extends beyond religious circles, to any who seek purpose in today’s unsettled world.

A thoughtful work of fiction..or is it fiction?
By bj
As I free thinking Catholic woman I was enmeshed in this novel from the start. I had watched the new version of the Bible shown recently on television. At the end of the show each apostle was followed as they journeyed to spread the word of Jesus. All of the disciples were discussed except Mary who had been portrayed as a close follower of Jesus even up to the Pentacost. So I thought "What happened to Mary?" I searched on Amazon and found this wonderful work of fiction which I choose to think of as a very real possibility.

Believable and beautifully written.

A believable and beautifully written account of the life of Mary Magdalen. Bledsoe's use of the first person by means of the diary is particularly effective and gives the story an immediacy and intimacy that makes it very convincing. A first class piece of work and a highly entertaining one as well.

I thought this book was very well written and gave me a sense of inspiration. The views of what maybe or probably happened after Jesus"s time on earth ended is thought provoking and intensifies the great gift that we all got. I liked it. God Bless and lets continue the story of all times.
