In City (Houghton, 1974), David Macaulay draws viewers in through carefully rendered close-ups of a fictitious, ancient site in the planning and design stages, brick by brick. These detailed cutaways and cross-sections deconstruct. Here, Biesty exposes the underground passages of the Colosseum, the bull being sacrificed in the Temple of Jupiter, the lack of privacy in the public restrooms, and the activity in both a wealthy politician's home and in a street scene. Life at the docks, baths, races, and Forum is interpreted by a cast of thousands and with touches of humor. The text consists of a brief narrative for each spread as it describes a festival-day routine through the movements of a senator and his son. Numerous labels, packed with information, are connected to the colorful panoramas. There is no bibliography, but the facts and re-creations are consistent with authoritative sources. Further fun awaits youngsters in the hands-on activities in Philip Steele's Step into the Roman Empire (Lorenz, 1997) and the characters and adventures in Caroline Lawrence's "Roman Mysteries" series (Roaring Brook).

This excellent book is a visual delight.
It makes a powerful teaching tool-the pictograph-continue its contribution
to education.The book's detailed illustrations draw the viewer in and
engage him in a world that was as complex interesting and varied as ours
(if not more so).

Absolutely one of Biesty's best

Lots of parents will be familiar with Stephen Biesty's "Cross-Sections" series, in which he provides wonderfully detailed cutaway drawings of famous old buildings and the like (e.g., ocean liners, spaceships, cathedrals, etc.). I really think this is one of the best of the series, too.
Previously our favorite was "Stephen Biesty's Man-of-War," which detailed life on a Napoleonic-era battleship. That one provided such good information that even an adult reading an old Horatio Hornblower novel could use it as a reference book.
Likewise, "Rome" depicts the main buildings and neighborhoods of Rome, maintaining a narrative about a young boy of noble family, Titus, as he investigates his native city.
An absolute must for any child or adult interested in ancient history or trying to become interested!

Really Cool for the right kind of reader

This is a really great book for the right kind of reader... the kind of kid who likes diagrams with captions, or comic books, or pages with lots of detail. A kid who likes MacCaulay's books on City or Castle. "How Things Work" or DK, or Usborne spreads with lots of text boxes to read. This one ranks right up there with tons of detail on different Roman structures--house, temple, Colosseum, etc. And not just engineering detail, but social-economic tidbits too.

So if you have one of those kids who won't read a chapter book but can spend hours looking at tidbits in a manual or picture, this will be right up their alley.

I am a current SAP'er and with the evolution of Object Oriented programming this book is a must have for anyone who is interested in keeping up with the times. As an executive coach, I have found this book to be a great tool for helping people to better understand their values and beliefs on a wide range of life experiences. The stories or parables that Dr. Sampath has chosen are simple in construct and rich in insight. While offering advice to people is a necessary aspect of coaching, having people discover for themselves what they really need to focus on and change is more effective in the long run. This cool little book facilitates discovery and can be used in a group setting or in one-on-one engagements. I use it myself as a way to deepen my own reflection on being a better parent, husband, friend and worker.

Like everything worth having

This is a brilliant play but very few people will be able to appreciate it fully on a first reading. It needs to be investigated, preferably inhabited in rehearsal and performance and then an audience can have a moving and startling experience. Iizuka's text and even stage directions are evocative and expertly crafted, the blend of grit and poetic flights of myth get to the heart of elusive issues. Take the time. You will be richer for it.

About the Author
Osman Tokhi is Reader in Control and Systems Engineering at the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, the University of Sheffield, UK. His research interests include active noise and vibration control, intelligent/adaptive control, biomedical applications of control, parallel processing, real-time signal processing and control, application of soft computing techniques to modelling and control of dynamic systems. He is the author of three books and over 200 refereed research papers, and serves on the editorial board of several other international journals. He is co-founder of the IEE Inter-Active: International Online Conferenence on Active Control of Sound and Vibration series. He is a Member of the IEE, Senior Member of the IEEE and Member of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV). Sandor Veres is Professor of Autonomous Control Systems at the University of Southampton, UK. His interests include the theory and practice of control engineering including adaptive and intelligent control systems, robust modelling and hardware implementations using microprocessors. He is the author of two books and over 100 refereed research papers. He is cofounder of the IEE Inter-Active: International Online Conference on Active Control of Sound and Vibration series. He is a Member of the IEE and on the Executive Committee of the IEE Professional Network on Concepts and Theory of Control Systems.
