About the Author
Clay Biles is a former U.S. Federal Air Marshal, serving in this capacity from April 13, 2008 to June 3, 2013. Clay was awarded the Distinguished Honor Graduate Award for his air marshal training class, and served as the Lead Firearms Instructor for the Federal Air Marshal Service's San Francisco Field Office from 2011-2012. He is a former Navy SEAL, Stanford Medical Center Researcher, and bodyguard for President Hamid Karzai, of Afghanistan.

As I read through the book it's like reliving my time in the FAMs

As I read through the book it's like reliving my time in the FAMs....the personalities....the "supervisors"....the "SS clique"....the lack of standards as "its who you know"....Clay did a great job capturing the feel of what today's Air Marshals have to contend with. God Bless the men and women who are out there daily protecting our nation's transportation system; they will forever be vigilant regardless of the bureaucracy.

FAM time...

Having been at the SFFO from it's inception to 4/12, when I transferred to the MOC/TSOC, I can say that there are facts of FAMS reality revealed in the book. Personality differences, rumors, and individual perceptions aside, the FACT that DC FAMS management instituted a culture of fear, intimidation, and nepotism is known by all in the agency. The book shares one FAM's experience of that rotten festering management mentality. He never claimed to be perfect.

This was purchased as required text for a Health Comm but I thuroughly enjoyed reading it. Well written with lots of information but not too many boring details we don't need. I am impressed with the wealth of information given to us in an easy to read and enjoyable format

PreSchool-Grade 1 Pookins, used to getting her own way through yelling, throwing apples, and making faces, meets a gnome who grants her three wishes. But her wish to become a flower backfires when she finds it to be a dreary existence, so Pookins trades her bad habits for freedom. The story borders on being too cute, starting with the name ``Pookins,'' and the plot is not original. The cartoon-like pictures also suffer from cuteness, with fat little people and lots of pinks and yellows. But humor manages to redeem the book. Preschoolers will enjoy Pookins' naughtiness, including whizzing through the living room on roller skates, and her humorous facial expressions as she realizes her wish is a mistake. Although not as funny as Lester's The Wizard, the Fairy and the Magic Chicken (Houghton, 1983), this will serve well as additional storytime material. I know Pookins, but not by that name.

After reading Pookins for the First time, we were convinced that Helen Lester and Lynn Munsinger knew our daughter, Lucy. This is a delightful story about a precocious little girl, similar to our friend, Eloise. This story can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, many of whom will undoubtedly recognize the heroine as their own child.
I wonder if Pookins and Tacky are cousins?

Many picture books show children examples of good behavior, while others show bad behavior; this one shows the bad. Pookins is a little girl who is being brought up without discipline. No one wants to be the brunt of her yelling apple throwing ways when she is corrected, so they just don’t. As a result Pookins is a real pain and a good example to share children when they are frustrated at receiving consequences from their loving parents.

Delightful!

I read this book to my daughter as a precocious little girl. She loved it! She made me promise that when she was grown that I would give her the book. So when she had her own son I bought her a copy of her own. The illustrations are wonderful!
It helps a little child think about whether or not getting their own way is always what they really want.

This book goes beyond vague theory and gives you practical advice. You can begin to use the ideas the day you start reading it. It works so well, as soon as I began using the Ginott suggestions I had many alternatives to the yelling and spanking I grew up with and didn't want to pass on to my kids. It broke the cycle of emotional and physical violence for this family.

Where earlier volumes focused on humans and dragons, now elves come to the fore in a tale of the machinations, power-playing and cruel games that are the lifeblood of the High Lords. Into this treacherous territory blunders a good-hearted elf, Kyrtian V'dyll Lord Prastaran, who is not a High Lord, has no political ambitions and doesn't care for the cruel ways of most of the elven folk. Kyrtian has a small holding in the country, keeps no slaves and his human servants actually like him. Obsessed with military tactics out in the middle of nowhere, Kyrtian has learned the art of war-which brings him to the attention of the High Lords. Against his will, Kyrtian ends up leading the elven armies in their ongoing war against the dragons and the halfblood elves that have plagued them throughout the series. But the battles that Kyrtian supposedly wins against his half-elven foes turn out to be just the beginning of his adventures. The authors take moral stabs at issues ranging from slavery to strip-mining, but the story line itself glosses over details, while the action comes across too often as told rather than shown. Hopefully, the next installment, the forthcoming Elvenbred, will resurrect the fireworks more typical of these heavy-hitting authors.

The third Halfblood chronicle continues to unfold a mighty struggle among elves of great power, elves of lesser power, and the former slaves and other foes of the elves, who have a lot of substantial grievances but no power. The elven lord Kyrtian, having escaped a vicious plot to seize everything he owns, now finds that his archaic military skills are needed for the elven lords' fight against their own children. But Kyrtian is properly skeptical of his peers, and as the war escalates, he must continually reevaluate friends as well as foes. Neither Norton nor Lackey could tell a really bad story if she tried, and together they use the multivolume-saga format to incorporate abundant detail into their narrative. That is not bad in itself, but it slows the story's pace and makes Elvenborn a less than perfect entry into the saga. Have The Elvenbane (1991) and Elvenblood (1996) on hand for newcomers to the Halfblood chronicles. Roland Green

A nice continuation, but still no conclusion...

I suppose I came to this third book in the Halfblood Chronicles with quite a bit of anticipation. I read the first two books in the series a long time ago, and it was only recently that I saw that the authors had continued on. So, I brushed the dust of my original copies and re-read them so that I would be up to speed for this third volume. And while I enjoyed this addition quite a bit, I think the 2nd book, Elvenblood (Halfblood Chronicles), remains my favorite of the series. What nettled me the most about this third book was the rather open ending. Though a fourth book was originally planned, to tentatively titled "Elvenbred" with Andre Norton's unfortunate death, it seems rather unlikely that the book will ever be written, let alone released. This knowledge certainly put a damper on my enjoyment of this book. The mortality of writers is such an unfortunate truth for readers! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Norton left behind an outline for Lackey to complete the series... though with the amount of time that has passed since this third book's publication, it seems rather unlikely that that this was the case...

About the Author
John C. Lennox is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College. He lectures on Faith and Science for the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. He is author of a number of books on the relations of science, religion and ethics. Well written! Insightful and helpful too

What grabs your attention when looking for a book to read? Is it the title, subtitle, picture, author or content? When I first was offered the opportunity to read, review and post about this book, I was super excited! Why? Well, for one a friend and I have been studying the book of Daniel in depth for awhile now. Another reason is that I believe the title is a call to do just that, go against the flow. Finally, it is a well-developed apologetic or commentary on the book of Daniel in the Old Testament.
Now, am I still as excited as I was at first? Absolutely, if not more so! The Body of Christ needs to return to preaching the Old Testament and not solely the New. There are many examples we can learn from those who have gone before us as to how to stand firm and against a raging flow. Society as the author states a couple of times and in different ways is okay with people practicing their faith in a church building or privately. They are threatened when people live their beliefs in the full view of the public and hence why we hear, read or see many examples of those who want to silence the voices.
Daniel lived in a different society, time, and culture than we do today, but the message of Daniel is as relevant now as it was then. What message? Well, there are many, and God will speak to your heart if you read Daniel along with John C. Lenox’s Against the Flow as an aid to understanding and applying sacred writ.
There is a cost to standing up and being counted as a Christ follower. Words of hatred are always being spewed forth without restraint in either written or spoken form. Sometimes it can even be detected through music or movies. Regardless of how the real question is put forth, will you stand against the flow or be swept up by the flow? Do not think it isn’t true because it is, and we all know it as we interact with others or discern it from other media forms.
I highly recommend the book and when you purchase one for yourself, consider buying a copy to give to a local library, friend, family member or whomever your path crosses. Read the Bible and share what you learn with others and discuss what John C. Lenox has written to encourage everyone who is a Christ follower to go against the flow.

Powerful message for Christians today

"Babylon is the ancient version of our secular society."

Against the Flow is a book that combines theology, apologetics, and Christian living - and I simply cannot state how powerful a book this is! Most people are familiar with the fiery furnace and lions' den stories, but not until reading Dr. Lennox's compelling book did I realize how relevant the book of Daniel is for us today.

Just like the young Daniel, we live in a pluralistic, tolerant society that is becoming increasingly antagonistic to the Christian faith. Rather than becoming paralyzed by the move toward political correctness, there is much to be learned from the pages of Daniel, and Dr. Lennox has done an incredible job in this book that informs, challenges and inspires.

Against the Flow explores the book of Daniel from theological, historical and cultural aspects. While it's not light reading, Dr. Lennox writes in a style that is easy to understand and I often found it hard to put down. There is a wealth of valuable insight - these thoughts about tolerance, for instance . . .

"Tolerance asserts the right to have convictions, to make judgments about right and wrong, which differ from those of others. Tolerance does not demand that we accept the opinions, beliefs, and lifestyles of others, but only that we learn to live without forcing them to line up with us. . . . The new tolerance, however, is completely different. It seizes on the idea of offence and holds that I must not ever offend anyone else by expressing disapproval of any aspect of his or her behaviour or ideas. . . . To put it another way: the old tolerance accepted the existence of other views while disagreeing with them; the new tolerance insists on accepting the views themselves and not merely their existence."

In the introduction, Dr. Lennox writes about Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: "Daniel's story is one of extraordinary faith in God lived out at the pinnacle of executive power in the full glare of public life. . . . In this book we shall try to learn something about what it was that gave that ancient foursome the strength and conviction to be prepared, often at great risk, to swim against the flow in their society and give unequivocal, courageous public expression to what they believed."

An Analysis Of Daniel To Enable Us For Victory Today

John C. Lennox in his new book, “Against The Flow” published by Monarch Books gives us The Inspiration of Daniel in an Age of Relativism.

From the back cover: Daniel’s story is one of extraordinary faith in God lived out at the pinnacle of executive power. It tells of four young men, born in the tiny state of Judah around 500 b.c., and captured by Nebuchadnezzar, emperor of Babylon. Daniel describes how they eventually rose to senior positions of administration.

Daniel and his friends did not simply maintain their private devotion to God; they maintained a high-profile witness in a pluralistic society antagonistic to their faith. Their story carries a powerful message for us today. Society tolerates the practice of Christianity in private and in church services, but increasingly it deprecates public witness.

If Daniel and his compatriots were with us today they would be in the vanguard of public debate. What was it that gave that ancient foursome, Daniel and his three friends, the strength and conviction to be prepared, often at great risk, to swim against the flow?

Daniel and his three friends are taken captive from Jerusalem and hauled, in bondage, across the Middle East to Babylon. All of us need this book to help understand our identity and it would make a great gift for friends and family to help establish them as well.
