Very touching story between Evie, 18 year old military brat and her former stepdad turn lover baby daddy. Before Evie as to deal with heartbreak when Patton is a POW or presumed dead, Now Evie has college coming up, baby and her heartache to find a way to live life for her and their baby.

I absolutely loved this series. It was very touching. I hope to read more of Veronica's books. She is an amazing author.

Patton is a brave army man. He is willing to sacrifice his life for American freedom. He has a stepdaughter that he cares for when he is called to active duty. When he comes home for two weeks his stepdaughter knows something is up but Patton won't tell her. When she calls for his help he is there and she lays down the "law". She needs to know what is going on. Patton finally gives in and tells her which leads to more than either of them could have expected.

Evie is an 18 year old high school graduate. When her step dad comes home for a break she is confused. They are distant towards each other and it is killing her. She goes out with her boyfriend one night and over harsher dad talking to his friend. She knows that whatever is going on with her dad could get him killed when he leaves again. After calling for him to come rescue her they have a talk that leads to more than she could of ever dreamed of happening.

Will Patton come back to his daughter or will she be left parentless? Read to find out what happens.

It was actually a really good story for erotica. Only glaring mistake is that pregnant women don't go to the pediatrician for an ultrasound. They go to the obstetrician. Other than that it was good.

About the Author

Robin Brooke-Smith completed his PhD at the University of Birmingham in International Education Leadership. He was Principal of Edwardes College, University of Peshawar in Pakistan, Principal of the University of Toronto Schools and a Holgate Fellow at Grey College Durham University. He has taught at Shrewsbury School and Backwell School in Bristol, and was Assistant Director of the British Council in Tanzania. Most recently, he was Director of Consultancy Services at the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth at the University of Warwick. He is currently a writer and international educational consultant.

About the Author
Guido Crepax was born in Milan, Italy, in 1933. After acquiring a degree in architecture, he worked on publicity campaigns for such corporations as Shell and Dunlop and book covers and jazz LP jackets before contributing comics to the Italian magazine Linus in 1965. He went on to become one of Italy’s most important cartoonists, most famous for his psychedelic and erotic Valentina stories. He died in 2003.

Fantastic comics, beautiful presentation, awful editor.

This was my first proper encounter with Crepax's comics - I had seen images here and there online, but never read a full story. This is best possible way I can think of to experience this incredible artist. Fantagraphics' attention to detail and outright love for this art can be felt in every fibre of the book.

Crepax's work, to me, feels like a combination of Peellaert's eye for fashion with Pratt's sense of storytelling and Manara's always lustful gaze. It's hallucinatory, frequently surreal, but always compelling. The first half of the book are "horror" stories (really more like sci-fi, but let's not split hairs) featuring his signature protagonist Valentina. At first, she is merely a supporting character to Philip (a sort of superhero with magic eyes) but later becomes a much more developed figure in her own right.

The second half is devoted to adaptations of Dracula and Frankenstein. The vampire story is as beautiful and sensuous as one would think; all billowing lines and Gothic excess. Frankenstein is a stranger proposal, and comes from much later in Crepax's career where his line work was much looser and his figures more freeform. It's perhaps a little disappointing, but is still interesting to see the artist evolve 30 years in the turn of a page.

The sticking point, however, is the series editor. His introduction to the book reads like a 5th grader's essay on their favourite artist - all declarative sentences and Wikipedia-level information - with some outright bizarre claims that any actress with a bob haircut was clearly influenced by Valentina. His story notes are no better, pointing out mindless minutiae when what's really needed is context for the social and political milieu of Italy in the 60s. Compared to other series notes, such as RC Harvey's indispensable work on Pogo, this feels sophomoric and below Fanta's usual high standards.

I'm still looking forward to the next volume. Crepax is too important and too damn good to let ancillary material spoil his work.

Amazing collection of one of the greatest cartoonists ever.

I love Crepax-so much so that I have ordered his books from France and Italy in languages I don't speak. Now we have a beautiful, very large book of his work including Valentina and his adaptation of Dracula. Crepax version of Dracula is not only the best comic version but improves on the novel by trimming the boring parts and supplying stunning images capturing the weird sexual undertone.
Valentina is also excellent. Her stories combine her real life adventures and her fantasies, mixing them and blurring them together.
Crepax achieves something only the greatest cartoonists can-he creates a world of his own, unique and consistent and like nothing else.
This is the comics book of the year. Thanks, Fantagraphics.

He is especially familar to outdoor enthusiasts in north-central Alberta, where he has lived and worked for the past thirty years. His enthusiasm for wilderness recreation, his extensive knowledge of the field, and his desire to learn everything there is to know about the wilderness has made him one of the foremost authorities on wilderness skills.

Mors has taught four 3 credit courses in Outdoor Education for the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton for twenty five years.

Knife Sharpening

A very small booklet (4" X 5 1/2", 29 crudely illustrated pages stapled together) which gives some information about the principles of sharpening outdoor knives but is short on technique. Save your two dollars if you are really interested in this subject, and apply them to one of the more substantial books on sharpening, any of which cover everything covered here, much better.

He trained as an engineer and spent almost 30 years in the telecommunications industry before a change in career led him to become a full time military historian. He is the author of over 20 books on various aspects of World War II. Ken now lives in Southampton.

Good Read but Inadequate Research

The famous Channel Dash in February 1942, in which the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau sailed from Brest though the English Channel to their homeports in Germany, is one of the most dramatic but ignored events of the Second World War. Until now, there has not been a single major book on this subject since John Deane Potter wrote Fiasco in 1970. Veteran Osprey author Ken Ford provides the first new book on this subject in four decades with Run the Gauntlet: the Channel Dash 1942. This volume offers the best of Osprey's raid series, with dramatic cover art by Howard Gerrard, decent maps and a number of interesting B/W photos. The author's writing style is fluid and he is an excellent story-teller, weaving together disparate threads into a taught narrative. Yet as military history, this volume falls considerably short of providing any real new detail beyond what Potter provided. Looking at the short bibliography, the author lists no sources written after 1970, which is significant since the Ultra secret was not revealed until 1976. The volume is overly British-centric, both in source material and perspective, with limited detail on the German side. Overall, Run the Gauntlet is a fun and enjoyable read, but rather superficial.

The author begins his narrative by discussing how the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, plus the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen came to be at the French port of Brest in late 1941 and British efforts to eliminate them with nightly raids by Bomber Command. Although the author mentions damage inflicted on the German ships, he does not mention that Bomber Command lost 127 bombers in these raids - equivalent to about 8 percent of all Bomber Command losses in 1941. However, the Germans realized that the warships would never be fully operational if they were always repairing bomb damage, so Hitler ordered them brought home, which led to the genesis of Operation Cerebus. The author does a good job highlighting Hitler's role in the planning, which goes against the usual grain that he was not interested in naval affairs.

However, the author's exposition of the planning prior to the Channel Dash is marred by excessive vagueness, particularly in regard to the Luftwaffe contribution to the operation. He mentions Oberst Adolf Galland, but Galland had actually just been appointed General der Jagdflieger. He mentions three German fighter "groups" (he confuses the British and German use of this term; there were actually three German jagdgeschwader, with a total of nine gruppen) but since he provides no order of battle for the operation, JG 1, 2 and 26 are only listed on one map. The map legend claims that all three JG were equipped with Fw-190A fighters, but only JG 26 had them in February 1942 - this is basic research! The author totally misses the fact that Galland's air superiority mission had a separate operational name - Donnerkeil - which he easily could have discovered by consulting the Wikipedia page on this subject. Indeed, the author's ignorance of easily available references on the Internet is astounding and seriously degrades his ability to offer fresh insight. Similarly, no real order of battle is provided for the Kriegsmarine forces involved in Cerebus, beyond the three main players and their six escort destroyers. The involvement of 14 torpedo boats, three flotillas of R-Boats and six minesweeping flotillas is not even mentioned. On page 24, the author erroneously describes a photo of two Type 1935 torpedo boats as "destroyers."

The Channel Dash itself is covered in 42 pages and the author's narrative is similar to the one that Potter presented in Fiasco. The British reconnaissance effort is depicted as half-hearted and incompetent, which allows the German battlefleet to sortie from Brest and nearly reach the Dover Straits before being detected. Although this author joins in with the commission held after the war in condemning the various `frictions' that contributed to this failure, I think the real failure was one of British imagination. The Royal Navy simply didn't think the Germans would try something as bold as simply steaming at high speed through the channel. I think the British also bought into their own mythology about no foreign navy transgressing the channel in centuries and therefore assigned totally inadequate forces to Operation Fuller, their response plan. The idea that a few motor torpedo boats, elderly destroyers and biplane torpedo bombers could stop a fleet this size was nonsensical from the start. During the narrative, the author tells us that the German ships were moving at high speed, but really doesn't get into details about how all the various escorts - numbering over 50 light craft - were deployed around the heavy ships. I did think it interesting that the German fleet sailed within 15 miles of Vice-Admiral Ramsay's headquarters in Dover Castle - it would have been funny if Admiral Ciliax had decided to fire a broadside at his opponent on the way by!

The author provides one 3-D map of the battle in the Straits of Dover and the detail - at least from the British side - is quite good. The destruction of 825 Squadron's torpedo bombers is particularly well-told. It is apparent that both Coastal Command and Fighter Command were caught with their pants down and their contribution to stopping the German heavy ships was minimal. Bomber Command did show up, but lost a total of 17 bombers for no hits. Ouch! Throughout the day, the Germans shrugged off each feeble British attack in turn and escaped unscathed. Indeed, it is amazing that the British succeeded in shadowing the Bismarck in the North Atlantic but failed to shadow the Brest squadron while off the coast of England. In the end, it was only the appearance of three British mines that damaged the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau that took some of the gloss off the successful German feat. The author fails to mention the results of the air battles over the channel, with 20 RAF fighters lost against 17 Luftwaffe fighters.

A thorough and well-researched look at a notable encounter

Mr. Ford has done the reading public a favor with his carefully constructed and well-structured precis on the so-called Channel Dash. Readers interested in the subject will find ample illustrations, clear text, and helpful maps and charts. The chronology of the short mission is explained clearly both in the prose and by graphic markers included in the margins to highlight key events.

A Bit of Trickery.

There are not many things about Adolf Hitler that can be viewed as interesting. But the channel dash is definitely one of them. Hitler absolutely gauged the british reaction to his plan to retrieve these warships. There was every opportunity for the british to bring heavy units to bear against these ships, and in confined waters. But every attempt failed. The radar jamming was particularly interesting. The germans used a light touch, and the british never discovered the ruse. But, in the end these warships never benefitted the german war effort once they got back to friendly waters. Plus they freed up british warships by returning to Germany. But Hitler's plan is nonetheless commendable, because it made the mightiest naval country on the planet look very foolish. JRV
